The DIY Scribe story

Built in the workshop. Not the boardroom.

After more than 20 years around joinery and specialist fitting work, Les Thomas kept returning to one practical challenge: could there be a more controlled, repeatable way to approach the fit?

Meet Les

A craftsman who never stopped looking for a better way.

Les ThomasFounder and creator of DIY Scribe

Les is an experienced joinery craftsman with more than 20 years around joinery and specialist fitting work. His interest in the craft extends beyond completing the next job: he continues to study techniques, talk about joinery, and consider how the work can be improved.

The question

“There must be a better way.”

Years of fitting and scribing work kept bringing Les back to that thought. It was not about dismissing established craft; it was about asking whether the process could become more controlled and repeatable.

From problem to prototype

Prototype. Test. Refine. Repeat.

DIY Scribe did not arrive fully formed. Les worked through multiple prototypes and refinements, developing the idea through practical use rather than a theoretical product exercise.

  1. 01

    Question

Start with a recurring practical fitting problem.

  2. 02

    Prototype

Turn an idea for a better approach into something that can be used.

  3. 03

    Test

Put the idea back into practical workshop work.

  4. 04

    Refine

Learn from use, adjust the approach, and repeat.

The system that emerged

More than a physical object.

The product gives you the system. Training teaches you the method.

    System

    The physical DIY Scribe product.

  2. 02

    Method

A controlled process for fitting work.

  3. 03

    Training

Practical guidance for learning the method.

Continuous improvement

Always learning. Always refining.

Even after decades around the craft, Les remains interested in how other joiners approach problems and how techniques continue to develop. He follows wider joinery discussions and communities, including online groups, with the same practical curiosity that led to DIY Scribe.

That curiosity matters because the current system is part of an ongoing working method: observe the job, learn from practical use, and keep refining the approach.

The DIY Scribe principle

Grounded in the way the idea was built.

  1. 01

    Practical

It has to make sense in the workshop.

  2. 02

    Repeatable

A useful method should be one you can follow again.

  3. 03

    Learnable

The system becomes more useful when the method can be taught.

  4. 04

    Refined

Good ideas improve through use, testing, and feedback.
